In short
- Built for students, with privacy-protective defaults.
- Students 13 and older can sign up on their own. Younger students only through a school.
- Student notes are never used for advertising or to train AI models.
- Schools stay in control of school accounts and their data.
Who can use BetterNotes
- 13 and older: students can create their own account.
- Under 13: only through a school account set up by the school, which provides consent as allowed by laws such as COPPA in the United States.
- EU and UK: where local law sets a higher age for consent, we will ask for parental consent or offer school accounts.
Privacy by default
- Notebooks are private unless the student chooses to share them.
- No public profiles, no social feeds, no advertising.
- Only the data needed to run BetterNotes is collected.
School accounts (planned after launch)
- Schools will be able to sign a data processing agreement that covers laws such as FERPA in the United States and GDPR in Europe.
- The school decides who can use BetterNotes and can request export or deletion of student data.
- We act on the school’s instructions for school account data.
The margin and students
The margin is designed to support learning, not replace it. Read how it works in Academic integrity and AI principles.
